The Copper Kingdom

Once home to the largest copper mine in the world, Anglesey’s mineral abundance resulted in a mining boom similar to the gold rushes that were happening across the Atlantic – and with that boom came shipbuilding and a chemical industry that changed the island forever.

The Copper Kingdom tells the story of this transformation – the trials and tribulations it brought, and the lives of the people of Anglesey that experienced the shift from an island of small fishing villages into an 18th and 19th century industrial powerhouse.

The museum encourages visitors to wander the rugged and colourful pathways of Parys Mountain, before experiencing the working life of the Copper Lady, Miner, Smelter, Mine Manager and Assay Manager in the award winning, interactive “Copper Kingdom Centre”.

Where is it?

An ideal wet weather destination for families, The Copper Kingdom can be found on the quayside at Almwch Port which you can reach by taking the A5025 at junction 8 of the North Wales Expressway (not long after the Britannia Bridge crossing), or via Mona Road and Pentraeth Road from the suspension bridge, and following it to Almwch, at which point you can follow the brown signs that point to ‘Copper Kingdom Centre’ which will take you through Almwch and on to Almwch Port. There is onsite parking which usually suffices, but Pen Cei Parking can be found at the end of the street that shares its name.
