About Traeth Trearddur

Traeth Treaddur is one of six Blue Flag beaches on the island and among the most popular. It’s a long expanse of golden sand and turquoise water on the west coast of Holy Island, a short walk from the village of Trearddur Bay.

Access to deeper water is via a long smooth incline – making it an excellent location for swimming, especially for families with younger children, though there can be motor boats and jetskis during peak months. The nearest car park is a short walk from the main expanse of beach and has public toilets available, but there is a second car park (Maes Parcio Lon Isallt) within walking distance of the beach should you find Maes Parcio Lon St. Ffraid full when you arrive.

The area around Traeth Trearddur is fairly well developed, meaning that the amenities on offer are among the more plentiful, with shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants all available a short walk from the beach.

Trearddur Bay on the Isle of Anglesey

Activities

Traeth Trearddur is among the best provided for in terms of amenities of all the beaches on Anglesey. With the beach only a short walk from Trearddur Bay village, it’s far less isolated than some of the other Blue Flag beaches on the island.

The beach is also a superb destination for several water-based activities which can mean it’s quite busy during peak tourist season. However, it’s also quite an expansive beach, so there’s generally room even when busy.

  • Swimming: – Trearddur Bay is a popular wild swimming location and hosts regular wild swimming events. The sea is mostly calm, making it ideal for beginners, and boasts a wonderful beach and excellent scenery.
  • Diving: – If you’re looking for reefs and wrecks, Trearddur Bay is the location for you. The wreck of 19th Century iron hulled steamer Editor can be seen at around 10 metres, as can that of the Missouri which sank in 1886 and the Havasu which sank in 1937 and is, while little discernible remains, now a haven for sealife. There are also stunning reefs 80-100 metres from the shore, providing a couple of tanks worth of enjoyment. Shore access is possible at high tide, though the beach is popular, making early and late dives preferable.
  • Boating and jet skiing: – There’s a purpose built concrete launch, which makes it nice and easy to put a boat or ski into the water, though the beach is extremely popular with divers and swimmers, so caution is advised at all times.

Location

Traeth Trearddur is located on the west side of Holy Island, itself to the north west of Anglesey, and visitors will find ample parking a short walk from the beach (though it can get busy early in the summer months). Maes Parcio Lon St. Ffraid is pay-and-display, and connected to the beach via steps a short walk along the prom. Further along Lon Isallt is Maes Parcio Lon Isallt which is also an easy walk to the beach.

Right next to Trearddur Bay village, there are plenty of amenities within a short walk of the beach – including public toilets in the car park itself. There are also several restaurants, cafes and bars in the village, meaning you can head to the beach as part of a more comprehensive plan for the day.

Visitors to Anglesey can find the beach by taking the North Wales Expressway (via the A5 for those using the Menai Bridge) and following the road all the way to the A5153 exit and then Kingsland Road (B4545). The journey takes around half an hour, and will lead directly to Maes Parcio Lon St. Ffraid.
