Bank holiday weekends are made for getting away – just long enough to feel like a proper break, without needing a full week off. North Wales is ideal for that kind of escape. You can be on the coast, in the hills, or tucked into a cafe by the sea within a couple of hours of arriving – and Anglesey, with its beaches and open space, feels like a genuine change of pace.
Driftwood is a short stroll from the beach in Rhosneigr, moments from coastal paths, places to eat, and the wide open sweep of the bay. It’s the sort of base that works whether you want to fill your days with walking, swimming, and exploring – or slow right down and do very little at all. Come back windswept, sandy, and ready for a hot shower, a comfortable room, and a good night’s sleep. Wake up to a proper breakfast made with locally sourced ingredients, then head out again.
Whether you’re planning a quick bank holiday escape or stretching it into a longer break, Rhosneigr is a brilliant place to land.
Which bank holidays are perfect for a North Wales break?
There’s always a good excuse to get away, and North Wales works beautifully for all the main UK bank holidays:
- Easter Bank Holiday – spring colour in the hedgerows, seabirds back on the cliffs at South Stack, and quieter beaches before the summer crowds arrive
- Early May Bank Holiday – bluebells in Newborough Forest, long evenings, and some of the best walking weather of the year
- Late May / Spring Bank Holiday – an early taste of summer with warmer days, open water swimming, and the coastal path at its finest
- August Bank Holiday – beach days, watersports, warm evenings, and that proper summer holiday feeling that’s hard to find closer to home
- Christmas Bank Holiday – crisp air, dramatic winter seas, and the particular pleasure of a cosy cafe when it’s blowing a gale outside
- New Year Bank Holiday – wide open landscapes, long bracing walks, and a reset that actually feels like one
Each bank holiday has its own feel here – from springtime wildlife and coastal walks to long summer evenings on the beach, and quieter, moodier winter breaks for switching off properly.
Things to do near Rhosneigr on a bank holiday break
Rhosneigr is a great base if you like having options. On calm days, the bay is ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and gentle exploring along the shoreline. When the wind picks up, you’ll see kitesurfers and windsurfers making the most of the conditions – it’s one of the best spots in Wales for both. The local surf school runs sessions throughout the year.
If walking is more your pace, the Anglesey Coastal Path runs right past the village, with beautiful routes in both directions. Head towards Llanddwyn Beach for forest trails opening onto wide sands, or towards Holyhead Mountain and South Stack Lighthouse for dramatic cliff-top views and seabirds circling overhead.
Bank holiday weekends often bring seasonal events across the island, and National Trust properties such as Plas Newydd House and Gardens and Penrhyn Castle usually have something going on – from spring trails to festive activities depending on the time of year.
For a change of scene, Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park is just over the bridge. Waterfalls, forest walks, and big mountain views make a great contrast to a morning on the coast.
Places to visit during a bank holiday in North Wales
From Rhosneigr, it’s easy to explore Anglesey and beyond. Beaumaris is perfect for a relaxed half-day out – the castle is extraordinary up close, and the town has some genuinely good places to eat and browse. If you haven’t been to Llanddwyn Island at low tide, it’s worth planning a morning around it. Menai Bridge is lovely for a wander along the water, especially on a clear day when the strait is at its most photogenic.
On the mainland, Conwy Castle and the walled town make for a brilliant day out, and the drive through the Ogwen Valley never gets old – dramatic even on a grey day, stunning when the light is right. Betws-y-Coed is good for a stop, a walk along the river, and a proper lunch before heading back to the coast.
Back in Rhosneigr, the pace slows again – evening walks along the beach, simple dinners, and that quiet satisfaction of not needing to be anywhere in a hurry.
