Holyhead Maritime Museum

Situated in the oldest lifeboat station in Wales, Holyhead Maritime Museum features collections that explore shipwrecks and pirates, rescues and how it was to sail the Irish Sea more than a century ago. The museum also has a World War II air raid shelter and and a fantastic collection of World War I and World War II memorabilia. The seas around Anglesey have long been recognised as among the most hazardous in the UK – exemplified by the many wrecks which divers flock to the island to explore – and the Holyhead Lifeboat Station that houses the museum has been there to aid seafarers wince 1858, during which time crew members have earned 49 medals for gallantry and have experienced some vital moments in history.

From an exhibit detailing the life of Captain John Macgregor Skinner (1761 – 1832) to the popular Holyhead at War exhibit, the museum is full to the brim with exciting and interesting historical artefacts and stories. Definitely one to catch if you’re in the Holyhead area during its open periods.
