With over 135 miles of coastline, Anglesey offers huge potential and opportunities to find some incredible windsurfing spots. You don’t have to travel halfway around the world with bags of windsurfing kit to have a great session as Anglesey is blessed with stunning beaches and plenty of wind throughout the year. There are 17 beaches on the island but which ones are great for windsurfing and which one is the best?

Rhosneigr is without a doubt the best spot for windsurfing on Anglesey but there are another 6 beaches on the island where you can catch a wave as well.

Here’s your ultimate guide to the top locations, lessons, and tips for an unforgettable windsurfing experience in Anglesey.

The Best Beach For Windsurfing in Anglesey, North Wales

Rhosneigr Beach Is A Windsurfing Hotspot

Widely regarded as the most renowned windsurfing spot in Wales and possibly the finest wave beach in the UK, Rhosneigr boasts a picturesque horseshoe-shaped sandy bay, making it an ideal location for exhilarating windsurfing adventures.

Rhosneigr benefits from exceptional wind and waves that travel directly up the Irish Sea. The prevailing South Westerly wind is accelerated between Wales and Ireland, delivering impeccable conditions to this charming coastal town.

The spacious bay offers a diverse range of conditions in a single location. With low tide or gentle winds, it’s an excellent spot for beginners to familiarise themselves with the sport.

The gradual sloping sandbar generates delightfully entertaining waves that wrap around the bay, ensuring you’ll find the perfect waves to match your skill level.

When it comes to wind direction, South or Southwest winds are ideal, but North or Northwest winds can also create fantastic wave conditions. The best waves are typically found during an incoming tide.

Be cautious of submerged rocks at high tide and a powerful rip current at the Southern end of the bay.

Local windsurfers are known to put on an impressive display, making the beach a thrilling spectacle on windy days. Rhosneigr Beaches also hosts events organised by the British Wavesailing Association (BWA), further solidifying its reputation as one of the top windsurfing destinations in the UK.

You can take a look at what’s happening on the beach right now with our Rhosneigr beach webcam.

Other Windsurfing Locations

  1. Trearddur Bay: This sheltered bay offers calmer conditions, making it an ideal location for those looking to practice their skills in a more controlled environment. It’s a great beach for intermediates.  Conditions are best when there are west or northwest winds. As powerful riptides exist on this beach you’re advised to check the tides before getting on the water.
  1. Porthdafarch: With its breathtaking coastal scenery and challenging breaks, Porthdafarch is perfect for more experienced windsurfers seeking an exhilarating ride. Southwest to southerly winds makes for the best windsurfing conditions on this beach. Some fairly big swells can be produced. However, watch out for the strong rip tide at high tide. When the winds are strong the sea can become very rough.
  1. Lligwy Bay: Located on the east coast of Anglesey, Lligwy Bay offers a wide sandy beach with relatively flat water conditions, making it suitable for beginners and intermediate windsurfers. The tide goes out a long way making sailing almost impossible. Conditions are best with N and NE winds.
  1. Newborough Beach: Situated on the southwestern side of the island, Newborough Beach boasts a large expanse of sand and stunning views of Llanddwyn Island. The beach is exposed to prevailing south-westerly winds, providing excellent conditions for windsurfing.
  1. Traeth Bychan: Located on the east coast of Anglesey, near Moelfre, Traeth Bychan is a sandy beach that offers good conditions for novice windsurfers. However, limited windsurfing takes place here as the beach is crowded with sailing boats and jet skis.
  1. Traeth Coch (Red Wharf Bay): Found on the eastern coast of Anglesey, Traeth Coch is a large sandy beach that stretches between Pentraeth and Benllech. This beach is not suitable for beginners at any time. It can work for intermediates within 2 hours of low tide when there is a northerly wind.

Windsurfing Season and Conditions

The best time of year for windsurfing in Anglesey is during the spring and summer months when the weather is warmer and wind conditions are more favourable. Typical wind directions include southwesterly or westerly, providing optimal conditions for all skill levels.

Equipment Rentals and Shops

Funsport Rhosneigr is a go-to spot for all your windsurfing needs. With a wide range of equipment, gear, and accessories, the friendly and knowledgeable staff can provide expert advice on the area’s windsurfing spots and help with any necessary repairs or maintenance services.

Reputable schools and instructors provide personalised coaching, using modern teaching techniques to ensure a safe and enjoyable learning experience. Choose from group lessons, private sessions, or multi-day courses to find the perfect fit for your goals.

Local Windsurfing Events

Don’t miss the annual BWA wave classic that takes place in Rhosneigr. The competition attracts participants and spectators from near and far.

Rhosneigr is among the four premier sites in the UK where they hold their events.  The event usually takes place sometime during May each year, however, this year’s (2023) competition has been delayed until September.

Accommodations and Amenities

If you’re heading to Rhosneigr, which as we mentioned above is one of the best places for windsurfing on the island, there’s Driftwood, a remarkable boutique guest house which is a great place to base yourself. There’s also a selection of hotels and caravan sites, as well as a selection of rental properties available if you prefer.

After a day on the water, you can refuel and relax at nearby restaurants, cafes, and shops

What To Do When You’re Not On The Water

Sadly, no one can predict the weather, not even in Anglesey, so if the waves are not right or you’ve had enough for the day there are plenty of other things to do in Anglesey and around North Wales.

Safety Tips and Precautions

Before hitting the water, remember to check weather forecasts and tide times, wear appropriate gear like life jackets and wetsuits, and respect local regulations or restrictions. Be mindful of your skill level, avoid overcrowded spots, and always let someone know your plans before venturing out.
