Are you craving an adrenaline rush and a thrilling challenge? Look no further than kitesurfing on the beautiful beaches of Anglesey! With its stunning coastline and optimal weather conditions, Anglesey has become a top destination for many watersports including kitesurfing. But with 125 miles of coastline and 47 beaches, where do you start? Rhosneigr and Llanddwyn are two of the best beaches for kitesurfing in Anglesey. Read on and we’ll provide you with all the information you need to plan your next adventure on the water.
Rhosneigr
Our list of top beaches starts with those at Rhosneigr, which is without a doubt the kitesurfing capital of Anglesey. It even makes one of Red Bulls top ten spots in the UK for kitesurfing. The reason it’s so great is that there’s wind, waves, and a big sandy bay. As a bonus, there are amazing views of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) in the distance. When the conditions are right, it’s fantastic for kitesurfing.
Rhosneigr lies on Anglesey’s Western shore and has two broad sandy beaches, Traeth Crigyll and Traeth Llydan located in a huge bay divided by a rocky outcrop. The more northern beach, Traeth Crigyll attracts most kitesurfers, while surfers tend to head to the more southern beach, broad beach (Llydan).
The town benefits from having two watersports shops, Gecko Surf and Funsport, where you can rent gear and take lessons.
The town also has a great selection of places to stay, including our very own boutique guest house, as well as caravan parks, hotels and vacation rentals. The town also benefits from a superb selection of places to get food and drink including pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops.
Look out for:
- Rip tides – there’s a strong rip at the southern end of the beach and the river halfway up the beach has a strong rip after heavy rainfall.
- Rocks – take a look at low tide or ask the locals
- Sailing – stay clear of the lanes marked by yellow buoys
Llanddwyn Beach (Newborough Beach)
Llanddwyn Beach (or Newborough Beach, as it is sometimes called) is a beautiful and popular destination for kitesurfing, just 13 miles south of Rhosneigr. Located on the southwestern tip of the island on the coastal side of Newborough National Nature Reserve, this stunning beach offers excellent conditions for riders of all levels.
One of the biggest draws of this beach is the wind. It also gets larger swells than some of the other beaches on the island whilst also being a sheltered spot. It’s a great beach for experienced riders looking for a challenge as well as being a good option for beginners or those looking for a more relaxed ride.
Another advantage of Newborough Beach is its size – at over five miles long, there’s plenty of space for everyone to ride without feeling crowded. Plus, the beach is backed by beautiful dunes and woodlands, making it a scenic and tranquil location for a kitesurfing session.
This beach is seriously long and you can sail on any state of the tide.
Good to know:
- Restrictions: Kitesurfers can only set up on the left-hand side of the beach (looking out to sea). Turn left when you come through the sand dunes to set up.
- Look out for:
- Areas of small rocks and boulders covered in barnacles
- The wind. The wind comes in sets and may end up much stronger than when you set up – Take a look at what others are using.
- Facilities: The main car park has toilets, a mobile catering and ice cream van (on busy days), a cold water outdoor shower point, as well as picnic and barbecue facilities.
- Carpark: A pay-as-you-leave system is in operation. Use postcode: LL61 6SG
