Free Things To Do In Anglesey

As the old saying goes, “The best things in life are free” – and there’s no exception when it comes to visiting beautiful Anglesey.  With scenic landscapes, historical ruins, vibrant art galleries, and more, you won’t be disappointed when it comes to finding free things to do on Anglesey.  

From enjoying a peaceful stroll around Llynnon Mill windmill to birdwatching at Cemlyn Lagoon, here are some of our favourite activities that you can enjoy for free on Anglesey.

Appreciate the beautiful scenery at Anglesey’s beaches

If you’re visiting Anglesey in the summer months, you can have a completely free day out by spending the day on one of Anglesey’s beaches.

There’s no shortage of sandy fun to be had at the beach for free. There are over 30 beaches to choose from! Some of the most well-known beaches include Red Wharf Bay, Llanddwyn Beach, and Trearddur Bay, but there are plenty of hidden gems to discover as well. 

Why not pack up your buckets and spades, frisbees, or footballs and get the whole family in on some friendly competition? Whether you’re building sandcastles or tossing a ball around, playing games at the beach is a great way to spend time together and enjoy the outdoors for free. 

For those daring enough to brave the chilly waters of the Irish Sea, a refreshing dip or some wave-catching on a bodyboard might be just what the doctor ordered

Pack up a picnic and save money while still enjoying delicious snacks and meals during your day out. 

Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest, Anglesey

If you struggle to sit on a beach all day, why not get active in Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest? It’s a beautiful area that encompasses an expansive beach, a forest that is home to red squirrels, and a nature reserve that is an important habitat for a variety of bird species. 

Visitors can take part in a range of free activities including hiking, cycling and running. You can also go on a nature trail, go orienteering or try out the trim trail all for free.  If you’re visiting with younger visitors they will love the free animal puzzle trail. 

Take a picnic, and some snacks and locate one of the free car parks for an affordable day out. 

Crabbing at Beaumaris Pier

If you already have your own net and line, you can head down to Beaumaris Harbour where you can pick yourself a perfect spot for crabbing. The pier is a very popular spot for crabbing and when the sun is shining it is a great place to hang out for a few hours. 

Crabbing is a fun and low-cost activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and it’s a great way to learn about the local marine life. After catching crabs, you can release them back into the water, or if you prefer, you can cook them up for a tasty seafood feast!

Entry to the Oriel Môn gallery in Llangefni, Anglesey is generally free. Although some exhibitions or special events may have a charge. The gallery features a permanent collection of works by local artists and has a rotating schedule of temporary exhibitions throughout the year. In addition to the art on display, Oriel Môn also offers workshops, talks, and other events for visitors of all ages. So if you’re looking for a cultural experience on a budget, a visit to Oriel Môn gallery might be just what you need.

Splash around in the pool in Beaumaris harbour

If you’re travelling with kids, the paddling pool in front of the RNLI building in Beaumaris is free to use. Take your towel, drinks and snacks and you’re set up for a free afternoon of splashing around in the sun. If you need to warm up, head over the road to one of the free playgrounds next to the castle. 

Get out and enjoy nature at South Stack Cliffs Nature Reserve

If you’re visiting Anglesey, be sure to check out the South Stack Cliffs Nature Reserve. This stunning reserve is made up of heathland and farmland. It’s situated on a stretch of dramatic sea cliffs that face the islets of South Stack. Visitors can marvel at the breathtaking scenery, and in the spring, watch as guillemots, razorbills and puffins breed on the iconic cliffs. 

Several events are arranged throughout the year, there is a visitor centre with breathtaking views out over the Irish sea and a play area. 

Entry to the reserve is free, however, if you’re not an RSPB member car parking is chargeable and donations are appreciated. 

Walk along Cemlyn Lagoon

Cemlyn Lagoon is a stunning nature reserve located on the north coast of Anglesey. The lagoon is a unique ecosystem that is home to a variety of bird species, including terns and sandwich terns, as well as a large colony of grey seals. 

Visitors to the reserve can take a leisurely stroll along the perimeter of the lagoon, go birdwatching or seal spotting. You can even take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of nearby Cemlyn Bay. 

The reserve also has a visitor centre that provides information about the area’s natural history. it also offers guided walks and other events throughout the year. With its breathtaking scenery and diverse wildlife, Cemlyn Lagoon is a must-visit for any nature lover.

The park is open all year round and is free to enter. 

Get on your bike

Cycling is a great way to enjoy the stunning scenery, explore the island’s charming towns and villages, and stay active during your visit. With its quiet rural roads and diverse terrain, Anglesey is a popular destination for cycling enthusiasts of all levels. So why not strap on your helmet, grab your bike, and hit the road for a fun and free way to explore this beautiful island?

Watch the regatta

If you’re interested in watching the regatta in Beaumaris, Anglesey, there are several areas where you can view the races for free. The regatta usually takes place in the Beaumaris Bay area and can be viewed from the shorelines, especially from the Beaumaris Pier. Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or just looking for a fun day out, watching the regatta in Beaumaris can be a memorable and entertaining experience.

Watch grassroots football

Not quite free, but it’s only £3 per person to watch Aberffraw. The team known locally as Berffro, C.P.D. play their home games at a pitch in the village of Bryn Du – not far from Rhosneigr. If you like watching football then this is a great low-cost activity for a Saturday afternoon. 

Go on a hike
