Likely named to honour the grandson of Cunedda Wledig, the red robed Chief of Dragons and initial patriarch of the Gwynedd Royal Dynasty, Rhosneigr can be split into Rhos a common Welsh prefix meaning ‘moor’ or ‘moorland’ and Neigr, thought to refer to Yneigr, who – according stories of the early Gwynedd Kings – joined Cadwallon Lawhir to wrest control of Ynys Mon (Anglesey) from the Irish in the 6th Century.
However, it’s difficult to find records of the village of Rhosneigr prior to the mid-18th Century – at which point it was a small fishing village, though with an active band of wreckers that would lure ships onto the rocks at Starvation Island before looting their cargo.
This would all change in the early 20th Century, however, when it became a popular holiday destination for members of the Edwardian aristocracy. It’s from this era that many of the village’s notable buildings originate – including the locally famous, Grade 2 listed, Surf Point (otherwise known as Sausage Castle).
Located on the west of the Island, and famed for its reputation as a water sports and golfing hot spot, Rhosneigr continues to be a hugely popular tourist destination.
