Trefignath Burial Chamber

Trefignath is a Neolithic burial chamber to the south of Holyhead on Holy Island, in an open field between the A55 and Parc Cybi. Originally, the site would have included a large cairn which would have covered three stone tombs. Excavations between 1977 and 1979 revealed several phases of use for a period of around 1,500 years, with three separate burial chambers built in succession.

The oldest of the tombs, at the western edge of the site, is a simple stone enclosure surrounded by a cairn of boulders, the central chamber, is the second oldest of the three and has now completely collapsed, while the third and newest of the tombs by age is at the eastern end of the site and remains mostly intact – its original capstones and two portal stones remain.

In addition to the Trefignath burial chambers, less than half a mile away you can find the Tŷ Mawr standing stone, a nearly three metre high Bronze Age monument.

Where is it?

Trefignath is located in open fields between the North Wales Expressway and Parc Cybi to the south of Holyhead which can be accessed by taking Junction 2 of the A55 onto the A5153, then Parc Cybi from the roundabout. While there are a few different car parks nearby, they belong to a Premier Inn and a Border Facility Service.

There are some stub side roads along Parc Cybi, but these are all double yellow lines. As such there is no parking nearby unless you’re a resident of the Premier Inn or are driving a lorry.

However, there’s a residential area along the B4545 which has some on-road parking and is only about a mile from the site on foot.
