Adventure is waiting on the doorstep
Experience all Anglesey has to offer from beautiful Rhosneigr
With indoor and outdoor climbing walls available, and natural rock faces for any experience level, Anglesey is perfect for a climbing holiday. With the option to book time with expert trainers on the island’s stunning cliffs or a few hours practice on one of the indoor walls, there’s enough for climbers of any level of experience to enjoy.
What is rock climbing?
A sport requiring participants to climb up, across, or down natural or artificial rock formations, rock climbing is an intense physical and mentally demanding sport which tests the full range of a climber’s physical and mental attributes in order to reach a predetermined summit. With climbs rated according to difficulty and technical skill, climbers are often able to assess their ability to tackle a particular climb based on community feedback.
Rock climbing is an activity that dates back millennia – with paintings dating back to second century BC in China depicting men rock climbing, but the pursuit has found new levels of popularity in the last few decades with the spread of indoor climbing walls and several television documentaries.
Best rock climbing locations on Anglesey
While Anglesey is famous for its sea climbs, these are not for everyone – and can be extremely daunting for beginners. Nevertheless, there are some fantastic trad climbs on the island along with some excellent indoor climbing available.
Outdoor
- Craig Badrig: – With a mix of difficulty levels, climbs at Craig Badrig are ideal for mixed groups with routes that will challenge everyone involved. While you might not get to experience the sea like you would on one of the island’s famous sea cliff climbs, the views from the summit are still world class.
- Holyhead Mountain: – There are around a hundred routes available at Holyhead Mountain and they run the full range of difficulty and technical requirements. Although the area is popular with outdoor activity providers, the mountain has more than enough routes to make it possible to find a quiet climb at any time of the year.
Indoor
- Indy Climbing Wall: – A mainstay of climbing on the island, Indy Climbing Wall began as a military training facility before becoming a fantastic climbing venue open to all ages and levels of experience under owner operator Jon Ratcliffe. If you’re new to climbing, or want to polish your skills before setting out to tackle one of Anglesey’s world famous crags, you couldn’t hope for a better venue.
