Newborough National Nature Reserve

One of the finest dune systems in Britain, Newborough Warren, along with its coastal marshes, sandy and rocky shores are the product of thousands of years of sculpting by the wind and sea, and are home to a wide array of plants and animals.

Newborough Warren and Ynys Llanddwyn was the first coastal National Nature Reserve in Wales, and named such in 1955 – some eight years after they began planting the Corsican pine trees that make up Newborough Forest (between 1947 and 1965) to provide timber and to stabilise the shifting sand dunes. The Cefni Estuary, and the pools behind the Pen Cob embankment, are also home to a huge variety of birds and other wildlife including one of the few remaining populations of native red squirrels.

Newborough National Nature Reserve is a truly exceptional area of natural beauty and should be on the itinerary of any visitor to the island. There are dozens of walks, cycles, runs, and even an audio trail, signposted – and you can find a list of them along with graded levels of difficulty using the link below.

Where is it?

From either of the bridges, you can take Ffordd Brynsiencyn (A4080) to Pen-lon, then Chapel Street to Niwbwrch and Church Street past Llys Rhosyr, and follow the brown and white signs for ‘Ynys Llanddwyn Island’, this will take you to the main car park for the forest – Maes Parcio Ynys Llanddwyn which will offer ease of access to the walks in the area, Traeth Llanddwyn, and the historic landmarks of Ynys Llanddwyn itself.
