Twr Mawr Lighthouse
Measuring 33 feet (10 metres) high and 18 feet (5.5 metres) in diameter, Twr Mawr Lighthouse was constructed in 1873 and is tapered in the characteristic style of previous Anglesey windmills – in fact, it’s possible that the tower was actually used as a windmill originally – which may be what is being referred to in historical documents that list the cost of the lantern and fittings as £250 7s 6d, including the adaptation of an “earlier tower”.
The optic, silver-plated reflector and Fresnel lens date to 1861, but were used well into the 1970s – the lantern was originally lit by six Argand lamps which had an output of between six and 10 candelas with reflectors.
Where is it?
Twr Mawr Lighthouse is located on Ynys Llanddwyn, just off Traeth Llanddwyn, a tidal island reachable on foot during low tide. You’ll need to park in the nearby Maes Parcio Ynys Llanddwyn and take a ten minute walk to the site (you may need a bit of a paddle depending on the time of day).
While Twr Mawr Lighthouse is a single site of historic interest, Ynys Llanddwyn is home to several sites of historical interest which you can walk around during a morning or afternoon. The island also has some great beaches, so it’s possible to make a day of it – exploring the historic sites and following it by a picnic on the beach.
