Swtan Heritage Museum

One of the oldest surviving, and last thatched, residences on the island, the cottage that houses the Swtan Heritage Museum was likely originally constructed in the mid-19th century – though there has been a building recorded on the land since the mid-17th century. The building underwent major restoration in the late 1990s, when traditional building techniques were used to turn a ruin into what we see today – a phenomenal example of a mid-19th century rural dwelling.

The museum, as it now exists, is as close to how it would have appeared originally as has been possible – with authentic period artefacts creating an immersive and authentic experience of the past. The museum is more than just the cottage, however, there’s plenty to do to allow families to spend a good few hours experiencing rural Welsh life at this moment in history. This includes:

  • Activities for the children – including feeding the hungry hens.
  • Information barn
  • A collection of vintage tools.
  • A well-stocked herb garden and small orchard of old Welsh varieties.
  • A sheltered picnic area for the use of patrons.

Where is it?

Swtan Heritage Museum is located about a five minute walk from Porth Swtan (Church Bay beach) on the North West coast of the island, and a short walk from the nearest public car park. You can reach the museum by taking the North Wales Expressway to junction 3, then taking the A5 (Holyhead Road) before turning right onto the A5025 which will take you all the way to Church Bay where the museum and parking will be on your left. Although the museum is probably only half a day’s activity, there’s a cliffside path between Church Bay and the tiny Porth Crugmor bay which is well worth it for the views alone, and the Wavecrest Cafe to grab a drink and a bite to eat.
